Everything You Need to Know About Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island National Park, just off the coast at Nilaveli near Trincomalee, is one of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka and easily the most accessible. Clear turquoise water, a living coral reef, harmless blacktip reef sharks and resident sea turtles make it the best snorkelling day trip on the island. Here is what you need to know before you go.

Where Is Pigeon Island and How Do You Get There?

The park sits roughly one kilometre off the Nilaveli coast. Boats make the crossing in 10 to 15 minutes, departing from Nilaveli Beach, and the trip is short enough that it is comfortable even for nervous sailors.

Getting to Nilaveli itself takes six to seven hours from Colombo by road. Most visitors base themselves in Nilaveli or nearby Uppuveli for a night or two rather than attempting the island as a day trip from anywhere far away.

Top Things to Do

Snorkel with blacktip reef sharks. This is the signature experience. The sharks are small, shy and harmless to humans, and seeing them cruise the shallows is the reason many people make the trip.

Explore the coral reef. The park protects over 100 species of coral along with a dense population of reef fish. The reef is genuinely alive and worth taking your time over.

See the sea turtles. Green turtles and hawksbills are frequently spotted feeding around the reef.

Relax on Nilaveli Beach. The island trip usually takes half a day, leaving the rest for the mainland beach.

Best Time to Visit

The east coast season runs May to October, and this is when Pigeon Island is at its best — calm seas and underwater visibility that regularly exceeds 15 metres.

The park effectively closes during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February, when the sea is too rough for safe crossings and visibility collapses. Do not plan a Trincomalee snorkelling trip in those months.

Entrance Fees and Boat Costs

Visitors pay a national park entrance fee, and the boat charter is separate — typically priced per boat, so the per-person cost drops significantly if you can join or form a group. Snorkelling gear rental is available at the beach for a small additional charge.

Essential Tips

• Start early. Boats generally begin running around 8:00 AM. Early trips get calmer water, better light and fewer people on the reef.
• Do not touch or stand on the coral. It is fragile, slow-growing and easily killed by contact. Keep your fins clear of it.
• Use reef-safe sunscreen. Conventional sunscreen chemicals damage coral. A rash guard is an even better solution.
• Take nothing, leave nothing. Removing shells or coral is prohibited, and there are no bins on the island — carry your rubbish back with you.
• Bring a waterproof bag for your phone, camera and dry clothes.
